Our favourite comfort sweets

By November the first I already had twelve identical conversations about how it was getting dark at four thirty. Hello winter, hello to the kingdom of cardigans I have bundled together in a forgotten corner of the wardrobe.

But today we are ignoring my innate Britishness that wants to complain about the weather. Today I will say, no, I won’t be grumbling about the rain! In fact, I will be celebrating that we don’t have forest fires or a climate that facilities some very prickly-looking insects! Because today, I will be grateful for my comfort treats. Here are the sweets that get me cosy (even with a sneezing nosey).

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk sharing bar

Generally, I prefer sticking to the sweet shop delights that come from a jar. But jars can also contain terrible things, like poison, or spiders, so just this once I will turn to one of the few readily available bits of deliciousness.

There have been many controversies surrounding Cadbury’s Dairy Milk in our shop. For every person who wants their chocolate fix, there’s someone tutting about the latest bout of shrinkflation or how the cocoa taste seems to lessen every year. But Cadbury’s doesn’t seem to budge from its throne as the nation’s favourite. There are many wonderful kinds of chocolate in the world, but it holds a special place in my heart because you can pair it with almost any hot drink and have yourself a winner.

Hot chocolate? Such an obvious choice, especially if you drink Cadbury’s hot chocolate at the same time to create a square root of chocolate situation. Tea? Delightful! Coffee? Splendid! Mulled wine? Might have to think about that one a bit.

Marshmallows

Bonfire night may have been and gone, but marshmallows remain as (metaphorically) warming as the (literal) fires they’re toasted on.

I think they can be often overlooked when they’re quite fun to eat. Whilst some people may accuse them of being too on the sickly side for their liking, you can take your time with them on a game of fluffy bunny (not a euphemism, it’s a game where you pack a marshmallow in one by one and see how many it takes before you can’t say ‘Fluffy bunny’ anymore) without feeling obligated to scoff the whole pack in one go.

You can’t go wrong with marshmallows; it’s like eating a hug.

Dolly mix

Yep, perfectly named. Those things belong in a doll house. The circular and square shapes of fondant make perfect cake decorations as well as being tempting by the handful.

This one comforts me not so much because it takes me back to my childhood, although it was certainly a favourite growing up, but because it makes me feel like a children’s book character. It may be their gleeful primary school colour scheme, it may be that that small size means they easily get lost in my pockets.

For those who are a fan of ‘the jelly one’ within Dolly mix, it can be sold separately under the name Dew drops. Like a lot of the treats in Wyldes, you won’t find it too easily in the wild (or should I say Wylde).
